What it looks like

Typically, the single dental implant has three parts:

  1. A titanium cylinder or screw which the dentist inserts into the jaw bone to anchor the rest of the device
  2. A metal alloy abutment which extends above the gums
  3. A customized porcelain crown

Amazingly, a dental implant is virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth in aesthetics, strength and functionality. And, because it resides right in the bone, it improves the size and density of the jaw and gum tissue. Traditional tooth replacements such as bridgework and partial/full dentures don't do that.

Getting a dental implant in Galloway

Many teens and adults who have lost one or more teeth to decay, infection or injury qualify for dental implants. Your dentist at Seaview Dental Arts will examine your teeth and gums and also use digital X-rays and other sophisticated imaging to see if you have sufficient bone to support an implant. If you do not, the dentist can augment the jaw with to ensure a stable foundation for the artificial tooth.

After your diagnostic work-up and treatment planning, your dentist begins placement with an injection of local anesthetic. Then, he opens the gums at the empty socket and creates a small pilot hole in the bone.

Next, the doctor inserts the implant device. A few sutures close the gums, and part one of the treatment is done. Over the next several weeks, your implant site heals, and the bone bonds to the device itself. Through osseointegration, your implant and bone become inseparable and strong.

At your next appointment at Seaview Dental Arts, your dentist reopens the site and bonds on the abutment and crown. As you use your new tooth, the jaw bone strengthens and increases in size. Plus, as you keep the site clean with brushing, flossing and professional cleanings, you can rely on its longevity and natural function.

Implants stay in place for upwards of 40 years. That means, if you're in your forties, you'll have your dental implant for the rest of your life.

As a final note, healthy people who have lost more than one tooth may receive multiple implants to support bridgework or dentures. They enjoy renewed confidence, youthful appearance  and

 great oral function, too.
